Researchers at Risk: An Update on National-Level Actions in Europe 2024
The Inspireurope+ consortium is pleased to announce the publication of Researchers at Risk: An Update on National-Level Actions in Europe 2024. Co-authored by Inspireurope+ partners the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the PAUSE Programme, the report documents the experiences of 15 national-level initiatives supporting researchers at risk across Europe. The report highlights how many national programmes have successfully adapted to meet growing demand for fellowships and other support services, while facing challenges arising from acute and overlapping international crises. Key advice for prospective national-level initiatives is provided, emphasising the many promising pathways through which researchers at risk can be supported at the national level. By spotlighting these different approaches, the consortium hopes to encourage the establishment of new and the expansion of existing support programmes to support researchers at risk and advance academic freedom. Recording available: Philipp Schwartz Initiative and Inspireurope+ Stakeholder Forum 2024
The annual Philipp Schwartz Initiative and Inspireurope+ Stakeholder Forum took place 18 and 19 April 2024 in Berlin. It was attended by around 300 participants from 37 countries. The programme included panels and exchanges on academic freedom, as well as national-level and European scale initiatives to support scholars at risk. The event also provided informal networking opportunities, coaching workshops, and information sessions geared towards different audiences. These included mainly researchers at risk, especially those supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Philipp Schwartz Initiative, as well as researchers from Ukraine, supported by MSCA4Ukraine. European and national government officials and other policymakers also participated, alongside representatives from NGOs, SAR sections, and higher education institutions across Europe. Recordings from the event are available here.
Inspireurope+ Webinar
Peer and Mentoring Approaches to Support Researchers at Risk
On 19 April 2024, Inspireurope+ hosted a webinar organised by the University of Gothenburg on peer and mentoring approaches to support researchers at risk at the Philipp Schwartz Initiative/Inspireurope+ stakeholder forum. The webinar considered the roles and responsibilities of mentors in supporting researchers at risk at host institutions. It explored the role of mentors in helping researchers at risk integrate into the host institution and supporting the researcher to identify career development opportunities during the placement. The webinar was led by Sarah Blichfeldt, SAR Sweden and International Centre at the University of Gothenburg. Based on the discussions, a brief guide to peer and mentoring approaches to support researchers at risk is now available. View the recording and guide >>
