About
Trends in international migration and global employment mean communities increasingly encompass individuals from varying cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Information is shared internationally and instantly. Such factors have important implications for interacting and communicating about research.
In order to avoid misunderstanding and conflicts, researchers need to refine their understanding of cultural, professional and organizational differences and to improve their communication skills, so that they can work and interact effectively with their colleagues in a multicultural environment.
- Objectives
This participative training ambitions to equip the participants with tools to succeed in their integration in a multicultural team. At the end of this session, participants should be more alert to the various codes (their own and the ones of the others) in their working environment. It could help them dealing more serenely with potential cultural conflicts and developing their emotional intelligence. These skills are also valuable outside of academia, as intercultural communication does not only pertain to research but also to sectors like industry, business, communication or IT.
In practice
In this workshop, participants will explore:
- The concepts of culture, prejudice and stereotype;
- The divergence of values, attitudes and norms between some cultures;
- The basics of intercultural communication and effective verbal and non-verbal communication;
- Building bridges in an intercultural context (if time permits)
Through a few exercises and sharing of personal experiences, participants will investigate their own cultural patterns and explore ways of dealing effectively with people from other cultures, either in personal or in professional settings.
The training will be held via Zoom. The link will be provided upon registration.
